Lately there is a lot of talk about december 12, 2012 and there is a multiplicity of different theories and apocalyptic predictions. 21.12.2012. End of time. End of the world. The end of Mayan Long Count. The apocalypse. The end of Kali Yuga. From the ancient mayan culture to the Indian believes a large number of prophecies and references point to 21.12.2012. But why?

Simple enough. December 21st 2012 is an astrologically highly significant point in time and the references made to the date throughout history and cultures more than anything else indicate the high high level of astronomical knowhow achieved by those cultures. Here is what we know without the apocalyptic references:

First of all, december 21st 2012 is of course the winter solstice as it is every year. However this is not just any regular solstice but I guess you could say the solstice of all solstices. It is the solstice defining the beginning and the end of the so called great year or the full precession of the 12 equinox. Just like the date 21.12.2012 the Great year is associated with many myths and forms the basis for both the ancient mayan and the ancient Indian calendars which are a lot more precise and astrologicaly relevant than our gregorian calendar. The great year lasts about 26,000 years. If you want to know more about the great year I see it has its own section on this website. Anyway from a purely scientific or astrological point of view the precessional year comes to an end and starts over. In addition to this, exactly on 21.12.2012 our planet earth will be aligned with the sun to point towards the exact center of the galaxy.

As a logical deduction from this December 21. 2012 must be the end point of the age of the fish we are currently in and the beginning of the age of aquarius - however that is already leaving popular science and moving on to mythology. Many people believe that our bible takes a lot of reference to the astrological aspects of the great year and in fact represents the age of the fish which we are about to leave. So this would explain the biblical end of time, not the end of the world but the beginning of the age of aquarius.
